If You See Just One Show This Weekend…

March 6, 2008 – 1:19 am

I’m thinking of making this a regular addition to the blog, making my pick for the weekend. There are plenty of choices, but for people who do not know the bands and who are overwhelmed by all the choices, perhaps a recommendation might help.

This weekend, there are even more choices than usual. Maybe not quite an embarrassment of riches, but close. The Club FF double-show on Saturday has some potential (especially given the sheer number of bands). Sunday’s show at Ssamzie Space looks pretty amazing, too (I’m always pretty happy to see Juck Juck).

But I think my top recommendation this weekend goes to the Saturday show at Badabie, which features the release of the second album by Kafka. Kafka’s triphoppy first album showed a lot of potential. Their song THE SHINING DARK was really catchy, in a sort-of Portishead-meets-Peter, Bjorn and John sort of way. Or a bit like Byul, if he were produced by Radiohead.

Kafka is probably not for everyone. But if their second album develops the promise of the first, it could be very interesting. Anyhow, it is what I’m recommending this weekend.
