UPDATE: I heard from John again, who says that presales for the Freebird show is now over 100. Sales to the Sunday night show at FF is slightly lower, but FF offers presales on its website, too. Now, there will definitely be tickets available at the door, but potentially not too many, so if you intend on attending either of the Lekman shows, be sure to get there early.
ORIGINAL POST: Just heard from John, the organizer of this weekend’s Jens Lekman concerts, and it looks like the venues have been changed again.
The Saturday show will now be held at Freebird — begins at 10:30pm and also features We Need Surgery and Rotary Sound. 25,000 won?
The Sunday show will be at FF — begins at 8pm and costs 25,000 won (with We Need Surgery, Pink Elephant and The Fist).
In other news… Battle of the Bands has its big finale this Saturday evening. Joining Round 1 winners Galaxy Express will be the winners of Round 2, Rabihem, and Round 3, The Pines (along with St. John the Gambler, judged the best runner-up). Go to Stompers to check out the big winner, starting at 10pm.
Myspace is rapidly expanding its reach in Korea. And this Friday Myspace will be sponsoring their first “secret” concert. The Secret Show will feature Nell and begin at 10 pm… But the location is a secret. You have to register with Myspace to find out. And since I have not registered, I do not know where (feel free to let me know if you know).
And don’t forget that Friday is Club Day. Plenty of bands playing at plenty of clubs. I will be adding the shows to the calendar later this evening.
Another real embarrassment of riches this weekend, with so many shows going on. Most people will be going to see Jamiroquai, no doubt. DJ Shadow is not too shabby, either. And round 2 of Battle of the Bands looks quite good.
But I think the best show this weekend is the Saturday show going on at Freebird, featuring a bunch of bands from Daegu (and Animal Dads, who organized the show, I think). In particular, I am liking Glittering Blackness, Fall; they are a wonderfully moody band, and I listen to their Myspace page all the time. Plus Animal Dads, Sighborg, Zentaffy and Dogstar. Should be a solid show.
Just 9,000 won. Starts at 9pm.
So the first round of the Battle of the Bands at Stompers in Itaewon was apparently a success. Lots of people, lots of music. Galaxy Express won that opening round and will be back at the end of the month for the big finale. Round 2 will be on Nov. 15.
Please note that the Jens Lekman show has had its venues changed. Now the Saturday, Nov. 29 show will be held at Ssamzie Space at 7pm, with a
Mixed Tape party afterward at Freebird. Tickets are supposed to go on sale at www.ssam.net soon (UPDATE: Tickets cost 22,000 won in advance, or 25,000 won at the door). The Sunday, Nov. 30 show will be held at Bowie; don’t know if advanced tickets will be available.
Mixed Tape Korea has been getting more active lately. They are also putting on a show at Freebird on Nov. 15. Here is the poster for that event. Okay, my mistake. There is a Daegu band show at Freebird on Nov. 15, but it is not Mix Tape related. Here is the poster nonetheless:
(click to embiggen, of course)
And, while I am it, here is a poster for the Bulssazo concert on Nov. 22 at Bowie.
Going back to a theme that I have not tried in a few months, recommending a best show to see over the weekend.
Not an easy weekend to make the call, though, as there are so many interesting concerts going on this weekend. You have Japanese band Kicell playing two shows at Kuchu Camp (aka Gongjung Camp), along with Byul on Friday and I&I Djangdan on Saturday. You have a very strong line-up at Bbang on Saturday, featuring Mineri and Plastic Day (and others).
But I suppose my strongest recommendation would have to be for the first day in the month-long Battle of the Bands, going on at Stompers in Itaewon. For one thing, the line-up is a pretty solid mix of Korean and foreign bands (this Saturday, Galaxy Express, Animal Dads, Concrete Organics, and Captain Bootbois). For another thing, it’s free.
In case you do not know where Stompers is, there is a map at the Battle of the Bands’ Myspace page. or just go to the top of Hooker Hill, by Polly’s Kettle.
