This is kind of a big week for Tokyo’s Moja. Yesterday the two-piece released a new music video for the playful, spastic cut “China” from their sophomore album, “Super Ultra Gold 79.” And this weekend they will be showcasing their explosive brand of bass-and-drums driven rock in Korea for the first time during Seoul gigs at Club FF (May 18) and Salon Badabie (May 19).

Bassist and vocalist Haru and drummer Masumi formed Moja in 2006. The pair originally played together as part of a rock quartet called Gorilla. When Gorilla’s guitarist and vocalist quit the band, Haru and Masumi decided to keep on playing music as a duo. Since then they’ve released two albums (2009’s “Moja” and March’s “Super Ultra Gold 79”) and have performed throughout Japan and also in England, Wales, Italy, Hong Kong, the United States, and Canada.

Their Seoul concerts were organized by local post-hardcore act Apollo 18. The groups met at Texas’ South by Southwest (SXSW) music festival in 2011 and have stayed in contact over the last year.

“Our official SXSW showcase was at the same venue as Apollo 18’s,” says Masumi. “They played after us and we thought they were amazing. We spoke together and they said they thought our set was great too. We’ve been friends ever since. SXSW is a massive festival, so being placed on the same bill as Apollo 18 felt like destiny to me.”

Moja are currently touring in support of “Super Ultra Gold 79.” The offering was recorded last year between March and December in New York and Tokyo. Wanting to expose more people to their awesome music and try something different at the same time, the band opted not to make CD copies of “Super Ultra Gold 79.” Instead the album is available only on limited edition vinyl or as a free download from Moja’s website – www.hellomoja.com (click here to be taken directly to the download section of their website).

“We feel that Moja are best experienced live,” says Masumi. “So we really wanted this album to be a loud, high-speed, and chaotic affair – just like our concerts.”

Her description of Moja’s performances is pretty dead on. Definitely noisy and wild affairs, Haru bounces around with infectious energy while Masumi flails around like a woman possessed while she abuses her kit.

Moja recently toured the U.K. in April, and rightfully received high praise for their concerts. While in London, they also found time to record two new songs.

“The studio in London was amazing,” says Masumi. There was a custom-built car factory, a skateboard park, and a studio all in the same building. It was so cool. We don’t know when we will release the tracks we recorded, but we plan to put them out as a special U.K. package. We’ll play the songs while we’re in Korea too!”

Moja play Friday, May 18 at Club FF in Hongdae. The show starts at 7:30 pm and No. 1 Korean, Juck Juck Grunize, The Magicians, and Gravity will also perform. Moja play on Saturday, May 19 at Salon Badabie in Hongdae too. The show starts at 7 pm and Apollo 18 and National Pigeon Unity will also perform. Tickets for both the Club FF and Salon Badabie gigs are 20,000 won.

Here are the estimated set-times for both gigs:

May 18 @ Club FF
7:30 pm Gravity
8:10 The Magicians
8:50 Juck Juck Grunzie
9:30 Moja
10:30 No. 1 Korean

May 19 @ Salon Badabie
7 pm Apollo 18
8 pm Moja
9 pm National Pigeon Unity (This will be National Pigeon Unity’s last gig before starting their mandatory military service.)

Momguamaum will play their eighth gig tomorrow (May 13) at Club FF in Seoul. Coincidentally, their performance will take place during the venue’s eighth anniversary celebration.

The Seoul three-piece is comprised of guitarist and vocalist Lee Woo-sung (ex-Cocore, Sagitta), bassist Seo Ho-sung (ex-The Plastic Day), and Kim Sang-woo (ex-3rd Line Butterfly, ex-Cocore). It was Kim who first pitched the idea of forming a new group.

“Sang-woo was Cocore’s original drummer, so we had played together a long time ago,” explains Lee. “One day he same to Sunshine (the Hongdae watering hole that Lee and his wife, the Sagitta’s Lee Jung-eun, own) and asked me to make a band together. I’m a big fan of Ho-sung’s so I wanted him to be involved too.”

Although Momguamaum made their live debut this past January, they actually began playing together nearly two years ago. Not happy with how things were sounding at the time, they shelved the band until they had a more clear vision of what they wanted to do.

“We had some practices together then, but we felt lost and didn’t know where to go musically,” shares Lee. “So we decided to put things on hold. We started jamming together again in September 2011.”

When they regrouped in the fall, songs came much easier to them. After they wrote three tracks, they pitched their music to local indie imprint Boonga Boonga Record. Liking what they heard, the label decided to sign Momguamaum. The act crafted one more cut and then headed into the studio to record their debut EP, “Deja-vu,” in February.

“We recorded ‘Deja-vu’ over the course of two days,” says Lee. “The recording sessions were very easy and fun. The staff at our label were really surprised at how fast we finished it.”

Issued in early April, the excellent four-song offering mixes elements of indie rock, psychedelic, and even a bit of surf music. “Fireworks” was chosen as the lead single for the EP and a music video was released for it shortly after “Deja-vu” came out.

A music video for the title track was filmed a few weeks back, and a video for “Time Capsule” is scheduled to be shot soon. The fact that three of the EP’s four songs are being turned into singles is a true testament to how good it is. Momguamaum plan to record more new material in the coming months and hope to issue another EP or possibly a full-length before year-end.

“’Deja-vu’ is my favorite song on the EP,” says Lee. “It was the first song we practiced together when we started two years ago. It took a long time to finish the track, but we finished it the way we wanted to so I’m really happy about that.

“After we finished making ‘Deja-vu,’ the other songs came to us very quickly. We have so many ideas now of things we want to do.”

Momguamaum play on Sunday, May 13 at Club FF in Hongdae. The show starts at 5 pm and The Moonshiners, The Freaks, Mary Story, Cold Cherry, and Have a Tea will perform as well. Tickets are 20,000 won with one free drink.

Momguamaum will also play at Club Ta on Friday, May 18 with Lowdown 30 and Hanumpa. The show starts at 7:30 pm and tickets are 20,000 won with one free drink.

Labeled by famed music magazine Rolling Stone as one of “The 100 Greatest Singers of All Time,” highly influential British pop crooner Morrissey will be performing in Seoul on Sunday (May 6) at AX-Korea.

Sunday’s show marks Morrissey’s first time performing in South Korea. Currently in the midst of an Asian tour, he’s already played throughout Japan and will be gigging in Singapore, Indonesia, and the Philippines after his Seoul concert.

Morrissey’s Japan gigs received very solid reviews, so fans in Seoul should be in for an entertaining night. Morrissey changed his set list each night in Japan (check out the set lists for the shows here), and all of the shows featured 18 – 20 songs drawn from Morrissey’s acclaimed back catalogue with legendary alt-rock band The Smiths and his solo career.

Wanting to add a more playful edge to the proceedings, at his Tokyo concert on April 23, Morrissey’s backing band even played in matching black swimsuits. You can check out a photo of the band and Morrissey taking a bow that night here. Read reviews of Morrissey’s April 24 Tokyo gig here and of his show on May 2 in Nagoya here.

Morrissey plays on May 6 at Seoul’s AX-Korea live hall. Tickets are 99,000 won and can be purchased at the door. The concert will start at 7 pm.

This weekend No Age will make their Korean live debut with gigs in Busan (April 27) and Seoul (April 28). For those wondering what to expect from the acclaimed American art punk duo’s concerts, here is a small preview from drummer Dean Spunt.

“Our Korean shows are going to be a wild, exciting, hopefully sweaty, and raging time,” says Spunt. “We’re going to play some old ones and a few new ones too. Get ready!”

Spunt and guitarist Randy Randall formed No Age in 2005 after playing together in a band called Wives. According to Spunt, the two decided to make music together after meeting at a hotel where they both worked.

“Randy was a maid and I was a dishwasher,” says Spunt. “He liked Black Flag and I thought he was cool. Things just sort of took off from there.”

The pair signed with Sub Pop for the release of their 2008 “Nouns” album. The offering received high praise from critics and fans alike. No Age’s 2010 “Everything in Between” follow-up was equally heralded and was ranked number 13 on Pitchfork’s “The Top 50 Albums of 2010” list. No date has been set for the band’s next recorded effort, but Spunt and Randall already have a bunch of new cuts prepped that Korean audiences will get to sample at Busan’s Vinyl Underground and Seoul’s Rolling Hall.

“Now we’re working on some really raw songs,” says Spunt. “They are pretty rough around the edges and I think quite different from ‘Everything in Between.’”

On Saturday night (April 14), Seoul’s Juck Juck Grunzie will perform their first gig in Cheonan. The quartet will be sharing their noisy, psych-tinged brand of post-punk and rock at Club Dolce on a bill that also includes Apollo 18, E.T., The Beggars, and Frank Beard.

“We’re really excited to play in Cheonan this weekend,” says vocalist and synthesizer player Lee Ah-reum. “It will be great to meet new fans and to play with our good friends in Apollo 18.”

The Club Dolce concert will be Juck Juck’s first show with their new drummer. As we previously mentioned, the band and their original drummer decided to part ways last November. Vidulgi Ooyoo’s Lee Yong-jun filled in at shows until Juck Juck Grunzie found their new drummer, Park Geun-chang, in March. Geun-chang is the group’s first official male member.

“We met Geun-chang through a mutual friend,” says Lee. “It was really hard for us to find a new drummer. Koreans say that drummers are like gold.”

“I think drummers are more like diamonds,” laughs guitarist Ham Jee-hye. “They are becoming harder and harder to find!”

In Cheonan, Juck Juck Grunzie will also play a newly crafted song live for the first time. The track is still untitled, but will likely be given a proper name by the time the act began recording their debut full-length in May. Lee, Ham, and bassist Booooong are looking forward to working in the studio with the newest addition to their group.

“We have great chemistry with Geun-chang,” Lee says. “He’s very smart and is so energetic. We’re very inspired by his passion.”

Juck Juck Grunzie will play at Club Dolce in Cheonan on April 14. The show will start at 9 pm. Tickets are 10,000 won at the door and include one free drink. For more information on the show, check out the Facebook event page here.

Saturday night (April 7), No Control will hold a CD release party for their eponymous full-length debut at Kuchu-Camp in Hongdae. Along with selling copies of their new album, the Seoul quartet will have some other goodies for attendees at the show.

“We’ve printed limited edition stickers to give to everyone,” shares guitarist Hwang Kyung-ha. “I’ll also cook up some very spicy ddukbokki. It goes great with beer!”

No Control was formed in the fall of 2008 by Hwang and drummer Seo Hoon-seok. They first met when they were high school students and later went on to do their mandatory military service together. After finishing their time in the army, they decided to start No Control. They found guitarist Cho Won-hee through a website. Bassist Noh Sang-soo was Cho’s neighbor. After discovering that they all shared a mutual love of noisy, complex music all four members decided they wanted to play together.

Last year, No Control issued their five-song “You Have No Control” EP. The title came from a lyric from post-hardcore pioneers Fugazi’s “Merchandise” track. Hwang is not a fan of the release.

“I feel really ashamed when I think about our first EP,” he says. “We worked a lot harder on our new album and tried to do our best this time around. We feel much more satisfied with the new album than our EP.”

Set to hit store shelves on April 9, No Control’s new album is a solid mix of post-punk, punk, and noise rock. Recorded between August and February, the effort boasts six new songs and three re-recorded cuts from the “You Have No Control” EP.

No Control Album Sampler:

“We’ve been making songs together for five years now, and for this album we picked the best nine songs we have,” says Hwang. “A lot of people like the album’s first track, “천일야화,” the most, but I like the album’s eighth track, “2월 4일,” better. It’s a very psychedelic, harsh song. It was completely improvised. Everyone just played whatever they were feeling at the time. We actually had no plans to record this song, but there was a communication mistake in the studio and it was recorded.”

On Saturday night No Control will play all nine tracks off of their full-length so fans can decide for themselves whether they prefer “천일야화” or “2월 4일.” In the coming months No Control plan on making a new EP. Hwang doesn’t reveal any details about the offering, but promises it will be filled with “more loud and hard sounds.”

No Control play April 7 at Kuchu-Camp. The show starts at 7 pm and Bamseom Pirates, Pigibit5, and Look & Listen will open. Tickets are 15,000 won in advance and 20,000 won at the door.

Hellivision features guitarist Taehun Lee (from Second Session), bassist Gunwoong Oh (ex-The Mustangs), and drummer Jiwan Jung (from Underwears Band, ex-Cocore). Former Cocore guitarist Myungsoo Hwang will be performing four songs with the band tonight. One song will be a Hellivision cut, two tracks will be Hwang’s solo material, and the last number will be a cover (the band aren’t saying what song them and Hwang will be putting their own spin on).

Formed last August, Hellivision are currently working on their first release. Set to be issued by the new RCL (Reggae Chicken Label) imprint this summer, the act have not decided whether they’ll put out an EP or a full-length. They don’t have an EP name picked yet, but if the disc will be a full-length album they want to call it “HellRevision.”

Tonight’s Strange Fruit gig starts at 8 pm. Hellivision, Funkafric & BoostDah, and Kuang Program will play. The cover charge is 15,000 won and includes one free drink. There is a Facebook event page for the concert here.

Having been a long time fan of Galaxy Express’ work, especially their incendiary live performances, I was thrilled to be given a chance to sit down and talk to the three-piece rock outfit about, amongst other things, their upcoming second tour of the United States. This was a few hours before they rocked the stage at Rolling Hall in early February. Enjoy!

For the new fans out there, please describe Galaxy Express for us?
Juhyun: Galaxy Express make dirty animal rock!

How has the Korean indie/ rock scene changed since Galaxy Express were formed?
Jonghyun: At the time, there wasn’t that much hard rock music being played. There were heavy bands, but not as many gigs in Hongdae. Then we started, and I think people (now) know more about hard rock music.

In the spectrum between rock, metal, punk, pop, etc, where does Galaxy Express fit in?
Juhyun: We love heavy metal, modern rock, and we are also into original punk stuff. Jonghyun and I played in punk bands before, so Galaxy Express has punk roots.

What Korean bands inspired you growing up?
Jonghyun: Sanulrim, Shinawe, and most of all, Crying Nut. I saw Crying Nut play on TV when I was younger and their actions onstage were really inspiring and shocking.

Juhyun: We like old Korean pop and country music too.

What international bands inspired you?
Juhyun: MC5, The Stooges, Nirvana, The Clash, Metallica, Green Day, Oasis, and many Japanese bands like Guitar Wolf.

Can you recommend any new Korean bands?
Jonghyun: Telepathy and Pavlov. Pavlov have a really dirty feeling to their music that we really like.

Tell us about some of the more memorable gigs and venues you have played?
Jonghyun: We once played in a library in an elementary school in Cheonan. We played a cover of “Immigrant Song” and the kids really liked it. It felt like we were kind of in a zoo. It was a great performance. Last year we did our first American tour. We played at SXSW in Texas and in New York, San Diego, and Los Angeles too. The crowds were great everywhere. We also played in Canada and it was really good too.

What bands have you been compared to?
Juhyun: We are often compared to MC5, The Stooges, and classic rocks bands like AC/DC.

Your live shows are always well received, how do you prepare for them?
Jonghyun: We don’t like to prepare too much. We just try to always do our best, and we don’t want to have any regrets after our performances. We have been doing this for many years, so practise and experience definitely helps. We make our set lists on the day of each show. We talk about it together and discuss our feeling, our condition, etc.

You recently did a joint EP with the iconic Korean group Crying Nut. How did that come about?
Jonghyun: We did a Korean tour called “The Dynamite Tour” with Crying Nut last summer. We were preparing to release a CD single, and so was Crying Nut, so we said, “Let’s release them together.” We actually decided to do this in Jeju. We were drinking, talking, and have a party there and that’s when it came together.

What is your approach for song writing?
Jonghyun: Most of the time, Juhyun brings an idea, a riff or some lyrics, and then we practice together in our practice room. We develop it more and more, or we just jam out someone else’s ideas.

(At this stage all three members got humble and insisted the others do most of the song writing)

Juhyun: We all bring ideas in.

Next album plans?
Heekwon: We don’t know what we’ll do for our next album yet. We practice every day and have discussions, but we don’t know yet.

Jonghyun: Maybe the next album will sound more like Galaxy Express. It will be different like when we first started Galaxy Express. Back then, we had a lot of psychedelic things and were into very unusual stuff.

If you could do the soundtrack to any film, what would it be?
Juhyun: “28 Weeks Later” – we love zombie movies!

How are you approaching your second US tour differently from last year’s Seoulsonic tour?
Jonghyun: We’ll be doing more gigs. Last time we always played with the other Korean bands, but this time we will be playing with more local bands from each city we’re visiting. Also, we want to try and watch more local bands play, so that we can learn about their vision of rock ‘n’ roll.

Do you have many long-terms goals?
Juhyun: There is only one goal – keeping making music and playing shows.

What were the craziest crowds you have played to?
Jonghyun: Our 11/11/11 concert at Sangsang Madang was mad. Also, our gig at Pentaport last year was really fun. It was our first time playing the festival in the evening instead of during the daytime. We started as the sun was going down, and the lights were coming on. One audience member lost her mind and had to be taken away in an ambulance. Luckily, it was not a serious injury.

Galaxy Express will be opening for The RockTigers and Japanese legendary garage punks Guitar Wolf tomorrow night (March 3) at V-Hall in Hongdae. The show starts at 7 pm and tickets are 35,000 won at the door.

This coming Tuesday (February 21), The Pains of Pure at Heart will make their Korean live debut at V-Hall in Seoul. Formed in 2007, the New York quartet began to climb the underground rock ranks with the release of their 2009 eponymous debut. Filled with infectious, fuzzy indie pop anthems, the disc rightfully received loads of glowing reviews, including a “Best New Music” tag from Pitchfork. In March of 2011, the band issued their sophomore effort, “Belong.” Receiving equally favorable praise, The Pains of Pure at Heart spent last year promoting the album at some of the world’s premier musical outings like Coachella, Fuji Rock, and Lollapalooza.

Guitarist and vocalist Kip Berman was kind enough to answer a few email questions for Korea Gig Guide. Below you can read about how he and his bandmates hope to hit up the always awesome Gopchang Jeongol (one of Hongdae’s top watering holes), dream of hearing their tunes blasting out of noraebangs, and would love for fans to bring some unusual local snack foods to their V-Hall concert on Tuesday.

1) What do The Pains of Being Pure at Heart have planned for 2012?
I’m really excited to start working on the songs for the next record. 2011 was all about touring “Belong” and I’m really grateful we got to travel so extensively. It’s been amazing that we’ve been able to go to so many places that we never imagined music would take us. But I feel ready to start thinking about the future and look forward to having a chance to start the process of making a new record that builds off the things we’ve learned from the first two.

2) You’ll be playing your first show in Seoul soon. Aside from playing, is there anything else you’d like to see or do while you’re in Seoul?
The fact that we’re coming to Korea for the first time feels pretty unreal when I think of how we just started the band as friends five years ago to play at (keyboardist) Peggy (Wang)’s birthday party.

A friend of mine in the band Beirut said there’s a cool vinyl bar in Seoul where the DJ only plays Korean music from the 1960s – 80s, so we’ll try to check that out. I guess it’s kind of obvious, but the thought of having kimchi in Korea seems like it will be delicious. I know there are many different varieties and I definitely want to try that while I’m there. I know Peggy will be into that as well. Maybe it’s the same as coming to America and wanting to eat a hamburger, but honestly if I was Korean (and not vegetarian) and got to come to New York, I’d want to eat a good hamburger. Also, we’re just generally into weird food, candy, or snacks, so if anyone wants to bring us some samples to the show, we’d be really excited about that.

3) What can Korean fans expect from a Pain of Being Pure at Heart concert?
We usually choose about half our songs from each album and then add a few from singles or EPs as well. I always love playing “Come Saturday”, “Strange”, “Heart in Your Heartbreak,” and “Young Adult Friction.”

4) Have you started writing material for the follow-up to “Belong” yet? Any chance we’ll get to hear some new songs in Seoul?
This is our very first time in Seoul, so we’ll focus on the songs we’ve released up to this point. When this tour is completed in the spring, we’ll head back home and start working on the new songs I’ve been writing.

5) How did all the members of The Pains of Being Pure at Heart first meet? Why did you want to start making music together?
We were all friends, and we bonded with each other over music. Peggy and I would hang out and listen to Rocketship, The Pastels, My Teenage Stride, Black Tambourine, My Bloody Valentine, and My Favorite. I thought she was too cool to want to be in a band with me, but when I asked her she said “ok.” (Bassist) Alex (Naidus) and I were friends and shared a love of more garage and punk bands like The Exploding Hearts, The Gories, The Dirtbombs, The Ramones, and Titus Andronicus. He came to the first “band practice” at my house and it involved playing along to a CD of drum beats with me on guitar and him on bass. I didn’t want to be the singer, but I was the one who wrote the songs and knew the words.

6) What do you like best about being in the Pains of Being Pure at Heart?
I love that my life is spent doing the thing I love most. I am so lucky that I get to make music, travel and play concerts. I just can’t say enough how grateful I am that I get to be in a band with my friends, writing songs and playing them for people in places I thought I’d never get a chance to see. We may never be rich or famous, but our life feels rich in a better way.

7) You’ve accomplished a lot as a band in a short time. As a group, what else would you like to do?
I would like to write a song that is popular enough that there would be a karaoke version of it. I feel that’s the true measure of success. I mean all the artistic credibility in the world isn’t quite as wonderful as knowing a drunk guy is singing a Pains’ song woefully out of tune– and it isn’t me!

The Pains of Being Pure at Heart play in Hongdae at V-Hall on February 21. The show starts at 7:30 pm. Goonamguayeoridingstella (who just returned from playing in Japan as part of the Seoul-Tokyo Sound Bridge concert series), the recently reunited Underwears Band, 9 and the Numbers, and Bye Bye Badman (winners of the 2011 “Hello Rookie” finals) will open the gig. Tickets are 69,000 won in advance and 75,000 won at the door. Advanced tickets can be purchased in English here.
